Start with WHY

You've probably done goal setting before, and often we hear about smart goals- where we set a goal that is measurable and achievable. I'm going to talk about goal setting in a slightly different way today and some of you may have heard about this before.

This is the Golden Circle, which is a concept that Simon Sinek created. It talks around how we need to really focus in on our WHY. So why is it that we want to lose weight? Or to improve our diabetes? Or to have more energy?

Often when setting goals we start with what we want to achieve and how- but we miss the why. This means that we know what measurable results that we want- and we know step-by-step how to get there- but we don’t really think about why we really want this. If we don’t work out our “WHY” then it becomes really hard to stay motivated as we can’t visualize or really feel what it is that we truly desire from making changes.

When setting goals I recommend that you work backwards and start with why. Why is it that you are here wanting to lose weight or improve your cholesterol levels? You may really need to dig deep for this.

If we take the weight loss goal example- on the surface you might want to lose weight but why is this?

For example:

  1. Is it that you want to feel amazing on your wedding day?

  2. It could be as simple as I just want to have abs again because I'm 40 now and I really just want to have abs.

  3. I just want to be able to run around with my grandchildren because my fitness is gone.

  4. It could be around confidence- I want to be able to feel confident in my activewear etc.

When we start with WHY, we can easily see how there is MORE to this than just weight loss.

I want you to have a think about what your why is. It can be as ridiculous as you like and sometimes they do sound ridiculous but that is what really motivates us.

Starting with mindset and knowing why we are doing something keeps us excited and energized when we are making diet and lifestyle changes. Change is always going to be hard because we are creatures of habit. But if we know why we want to change and can visualize and remind ourselves of these reasons- then this is what pushes us forward- closer and closer to our goals.

Starting with mindset is an important piece that many weight loss programs miss- but something that I always start with. If you are ready to take the next step on your health journey to become the best version of yourself, then book a free call with me and let's make a plan by clicking this LINK.
